You know those hand-operated shredders they sell for a few quid? Well, they're a waste of money. I just picked one up at Ryman (whilst going to pick up some CD cases). After a few credit card statements, the soft plastic handle snapped, rendering the unit unusable.

I bought an electric mini-crosscut shredder -- sort of a cube-like, top-heavy thing with a clear plastic trash bin -- over a year ago, and it still works fine. It cost somewhere in the high $20 or low $30 range. I have no idea what the inside of a UK office supply store looks like, but it might be something to look for.

I don't think they have the electric mini ones; only the ones the size of a wastebasket, which cost £20 (around US$39). Given that I just need to destroy about two credit card statements each month, one of those sounds like overkill.

You can in fact return it as an unmerchantable pile of shit, and I advise you to do so. See http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/ - in the finest British manner, stropping in a methodical step-by-step manner will get you everything you want. And if you say you'll accept credit on a decent one, I think they'll happily take the option.

I'd need the receipt though, wouldn't I?

The one which you ... shredded. Might help.

Although Trading Standards says this cannot in fact be required (since shops aren't required to give one), it wouldn't hurt.

I went there with the shredder but no receipt, and did manage to exchange it for a different hand-operated one; the new one was £2 cheaper, and seems to be made of harder plastics. I got the £2 difference in cash.
