What happens next?
Obama wins, a new golden age begins, ice cream and ponies for everyone!
Obama wins, not that much changes, mass disappointment
Obama wins, is assassinated, President Biden inaugurated
Obama wins, is assassinated, reports of rioting, martial law, Dominionist/fascist coup
McCain wins, amongst allegations of massive fraud
You don't like ponies or icecream?
Seriously, the prospect of a Dominionist/fascist coup is something that's been playing in my mind. The fact that over the past 8 years, all branches of the military and law enforcement have been stacked with Dominionists (i.e., Christian Fundamentalists who want America to become a fascist or feudal theocracy) is worrying enough; the fact that a few months ago, US troops were stationed in the USA to "maintain public order" in the event of unspecified disorder adds to that. And then there's no shortage of likely Lee Harvey Oswalds who could be encouraged to do the deed and/or blamed after the fact. What if Cheney/Rove et al. really don't want to relinquish the reins?
I, of course, hope it doesn't happen. If either of the first two options occurs, I'll be happy; compared to the past 8 years, the worst possible Obama presidency will be ponies and ice cream all round.
Not necessarily the Bush administration, though certain elements behind it. I wouldn't be surprised if the slimy, reptilian hand of Karl Rove was in such a plot, behind the usual layers of deep cover, unofficial allies (mercenary companies, Dominionist churches) or just useful idiots (fundamentalists again, and the white supremacist "master race" also come to mind). Or Dick Cheney, for that matter.
The ponies and ice cream could easily be covered by some of the savings of winding up the Iraq war. Or at least stopping haemorrhaging "reconstruction" money to Republican-linked war profiteers.
The good news in terms of the legislature I guess is that there's likely to be a rout for the Republicans in the senate and congress over this and the mid-terms in 2010, we'll see how that turns out.
I think it's a case of the Lincoln maxim proving itself yet again.
Anyway, even if Obama is the usual slick politician, he's still the lesser evil by a few orders of magnitude. Not to mention more competent, and less likely to have a heart attack and cede the Presidency to a boneheaded fundamentalist whackjob.
I'm also of the opinion that in Australia, Rudd was the lesser evil at the last election and remains such. (Yes, even with the abhorrent national firewall policy.)
I heard on the BBC's "World, Have Your Say" call-in programme some Brit from Texas expressed concern that a white supremacist might assassinate Obama, and then "the blacks" would "retaliate" against "us", and that was enough to not vote for Obama. But homeslice only had a green card and can't vote anyway -- and his partner? "Too busy" to vote tomorrow. The host nearly exploded at that comment.
