I stopped by at PolyEster Records today, to see if they had Morrissey's Irish Blood, English Heart. They didn't, but they did have Radiohead's Com Lag, a compilation of B-sides and remixes from the Hail To The Thief singles, released for the Japanese market. It appears to be a kosher CD, unlike the local singles, and comes with two booklets, including one with comprehensive lyrics in English and Japanese. The packaging looks a lot less cryptic than Radiohead's packaging for Western markets; I wonder whether this is a cultural thing (perhaps the Japanese don't equate obscurantism with profundity and seriousness?)

Yeah, I have that. Apparently, despite the Japanese origin and so forth, what we have is supposed to actually be the Australian tour EP - the proper Japanese version has weird noises in the Scatterbrain remix due to a pressing error.

It reminds me a lot of "Airbag (How Am I Driving?)" but it was interesting that the artwork is much more reminiscent of Amnesiac era stuff rather than HTTT..those bears and so forth.

The packaging doesn't seem any more or less cryptic to me? But maybe it's more that the Japanese don't get the cultural references you need to decode Radiohead crypticness.

It was pressed in Japan by the EMI/Toshiba joint venture (catalogue number TOCP-66280).

As for weird noises, I didn't notice any. Or maybe they blended in with the remix.

I have been unclear.

There was talk that there was going to be an Australian version of Com Lag as a tour EP. I was quite surprised when I got Com Lag because it appeared to be the Japanese version (which was meant to be a limited edition), but didn't have the pressing error.

I'm of the belief that they'd simply made another batch in Japan and exported them out here as the tour EP rather than bothering to set up the plant in Australia.

I found the Japanese writing pretty obscure.

Yeah, I got the same one last week. It's really weird because the Japanese are even more copy-control crazy than over here. There's also a movie with them playing "2+2=5" live which isn't too bad.
