This afternoon, Melbourne was a ghost town. The streets were all but empty, the usual crowds that come out on sunny days were absent, and the only sign of life was the sound of people shouting at their televisions through their open front doors. Cafes closed early. Bored checkout clerks talked amongst themselves in deserted supermarkets, and coin laundry attendants did their homework, uninterrupted by customers. I think it had something to do with some football game or something.
