Among the books which arrived in today's mail (from myself in Australia):

  • John Harris, The Last Party (the (IMHO excellent) history of the Britpop movement)
  • Craig Mathieson, The Sell-In (a history of the mainstreaming of alternative rock in Australia; not bad, if a bit too JJJ-three-chord-grunge-centric, though the Australian mainstream has always leaned towards rockism)
  • Colin Larkin, The Virgin Encyclopedia of Indie and New Wave (1998)
  • The VICE Guide To Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll (which I picked up before leaving Australia but didn't get time to properly read)
  • Michael Jackson (the bearded English one), The Great Beer Guide

well, "JJJ-three-chord-grunge" was about all that existed of Alternative, rather than indie. Plus I'm not sure that Underground Lovers or the Clouds fit in the grunge thing anyway.

Here's a fun factoid; what was the most successful Australian indie band of the 90s?

Well, if you use a technical definition of "indie", it was probably some manufactured pop artist signed to a small entrepreneurially-oriented label. Could it be Savage Garden?

way back in the day when i was a youngin, i often picked up Juice magazine just to read the editorials (when Craig mathieson was editor) I can imagine that the book you read had a lot of You Am I etc in it and can sort of see some pitfalls there but i do remember writing to the author a long time ago asking him to include the paradise motel in his first book....and he did !

I recall that the Paradise Motel was conspicuously absent from The Sell-In.
