The latest care package from Traffic Sounds arrived today, containing (among other things) Hydroplane's Hope Against Hope and The Cat's Miaow's The Long Goodbye. I haven't had a chance to listen to these CDs yet, though I must say that the cover artwork, by some outfit named Crushworthy, is gorgeous (if perhaps a tad derivative). The Cat's Miaow cover looks like an old Blue Note jazz record, whereas the Hydroplane one takes off Vaughn Oliver's 4AD album cover style very nicely, right down to the crisp, retro-modernistic fonts and photographs as a textural element. If the music is as good as the artwork, I'll be very pleased indeed.
steve (crushworthy) is definitely getting better in the artwork department. he's got a long history with bart miaow, and he did the artwork for the re-released cats miaow and the shapiros cds. the shapiros one in particular is one of my fave sleeves of all time, but then i might just be slightly biased.
